Even When You Lie to Me by Jessica Alcott is a young adult contemporary romance novel that was published on June 9, 2015 by Crown books for Readers.
This book review is a spoiler free review. This might be short but I wanted to post one before I go on vacation.
Charlie, an insecure senior in high school finds her in a complicated relationship with her new English teacher Mr.Drummonds.
Charlie deals with her best friend Lila who always gets the attention and loves it and also her very judging mother.
Drummonds is the kind of teacher that allows swearing, sexual innuedos, teasing in class. Charlie’s crush on him starts getting deeper once he starts teasing her and complimenting her. Teasing turns into personal conversations after school about his life in high school. Those conversations turns into lunch at a trendy resturaunt.
Their relationship blossoms throughout the book.
Charlie believes no one understands her like him.
Charlie’s was relatable to many teenage girls out there. To the point where we realize that we live in a world where a girl gets judged by the way they look and decide to show themselves as and not the personality. These situations show up a lot during the book and Charlie’s character develops because of this.
I thoroughly enjoyed the relationship between Drummond and Charlie. The way they would tease each other made the book so amazing, especially Charlie’s sarcastic remarks. I’ve never read a book that has a teacher-student romance happening but I really enjoyed the forbidden love and attraction.
The ending of this book was heartwarming and not what I wanted at the same time. I didn’t know if I should feel happy or dissappointed. The ending is probably the only reason why I rated this book 4.5 because besides that I actually really enjoyed this book.
I definitely recommend this book unless you want a steamy teacher-student relationship because if that’s what you want then this won’t be the book for you.
P.S. Can we just talk about cool the cover of this book is? Most of the time I was just staring at this cover. I just wanted to add that
