Harry Potter and the Socercer’s Stone is the first book in the Harry Potter’s Series by J.K. Rowling which is a young adult fantasy nocel that includes magic and the wizardry world that was first published on June 26, 1997 by Bloomsbury Publishing.
I’m going to include a spoiler-free and spoiler-filled section which is structured like a book talk.
Harry Potter believes he’s an ordinary boy while he’s living with his Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and their son Dudley. They’re mean to him and make him sleep him in the cupboard under the stairs.
After his birthday, Harry starts getting myserious letters which changes his life forever. He is taken away by a giant man to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry because Harry finds out that he’s a wizard.
This book shows Harry’s first year at Hogwarts and his adventures.
I really loved this book and I can’t believe it took me this long to finally read it. I loved the world and the charcters. Also, all of the twists and turns they take throughout this novel.
I know most of you already read Harry Potter, but if you haven’t you really should start it like I am. It’s better to start it later than never.
Strange things were happeing in the beginning; owl’s flying in the daylight which isn’t normal for them, mysterious people wearing cloaks and people were talking about the Potters.
Mr.Dursley has a cat watching him until the cat turned his attention to Dumbledore which amused him. When we find out that Professor McGonagall can turn herself into a cat.
“It all gets to confusing if we keep saying ‘You-Know-Who.’ I have never seen any reason to be frightened of saying Voldemort’s name.”
Lily and James Potter are dead and Voldemort tried to kill Harry as well but he wasn’t able to, when he tried his powers weakened and now he’s gone. Harry’s really powerful since this happened when he was a baby.
Dumbledore came to bring Harry to his aunt and uncle who basically hates wizards.
The moment Harry shared with Voldemort left him a scar shaped as a lighning bolt.
Harry Potter has been living his aunt and uncle for 10 years now and they keep him hidden in their cupboard under the stairs where he sleeps.
Dudley seems like a dickface especially when he was going to throw a tantrum because he got two presents less than last year.
The way they treat Harry is trash. The lady who usually takes Harry on Dudley’s birthday can’t take him this year so the family’s “forced” to take him.
Harry was talking to the boa constrictor at the zoo and Dudley came and pushed him to the ground and the glass suddenly dissapears and the snake escaped which Harry does with his powers because he was angry.
Harry gets a letter and it’s from Hogwarts and they knew where he slept but his aunt and uncle decided to ignore it. They send him another one with his new location in the smaller bedroom. I can’t help but laugh at how everyday they send more and more letters until Harry can get one.
When Harry finally turns 11, there’s someone outside his room on the boat knocking to get in and it was Rubeus Hagrid.
Hagrid keeps food in his pocket and starts cooking a meal. What made me laugh was when Mr Dursley was like “Dudley don’t eat anything he gives you” and Rubeus was like “Relax, you son doesn’t need to be fattened up more than he already is.”
Hagrid’s really livid when he finds out that Harry knows nothing of the wizardry world.
“Harry– yet a wizard.”
There was silence inside the hut. Only the sea and the whistling wind could be heard.
“—a what?” gasped Harry.
“A wizard, O’course,” said Hagrid.
Hagrid informs Harry about everything and he explains that Voldemort was a wizard who went bad.
He also explains that he can’t do magic because he was expelled his 3rd year but won’t say why.
When Harry wakes up the next morning, he thinks it was all a dream but when he finds out it wasn’t, he’s really happy which made me smile.
Harry brings up the fact that he doesn’t have money and that his aunt and uncle aren’t going to pay for the school and Hagrid told him that his parents left him money at the bank.
People at the bank are really excited to see Harry and they’re like shaking his and there’s a professor from Hogwarts and he’s nervous and stuttering. He goes by the name Professor Quirrel.
“What’s the difference between a stalagmite and a stalactite?”
“Stalagmite’s got an ‘m’ in it,” said Hagrid.
That made me laugh.
Harry meets a boy that’s going to Hogwarts when he’s getting fitted for his uniform and he’s kind of a dick. We later find out that he’s Draco Malfoy.
Any wizard who went bad was from the Slytherin house, Voldemort was a Slytherin. Now I understand why no one actually wants to be from the Slytherin house.
Hagrid gets Harry an owl for his birthday which was very nice of him. Also, the wand that chose Harry was the brother wand of the wand that gave Harry the scar which is ironic.
Harry had to stay with the Dudley’s before going to Hogwarts and Dudley is now terrified of him and the family just ignores him.
Harry didn’t know how to get on the train to Hogwarts since its platform doesn’t exist so Ron’s mom helps him.
I’m loving the Weasley twins Fred and George and I like how their mother forbid them to ask Harry questions about what happened.
“We’ll send you a Hogwarts toilet seat.”
“Only joking, Mom.”
-George – His mother
Ron and Harry are bonding and becoming friends on the train ride. I also realize where the bean boozle jelly beans come from.
We meet Hermione, I knew it was her once Harry was like she has a bossy voice.
Once they arrive at Hogwarts, they have the Sorting Hat Ceremony. This is the ceremony where they sort what house you’re in by putting on the magical hat and asks you questions.
These are the houses they’re in:
Malfoy- Slytherin and proud
Harry- Gryffindor and just happy that it wasn’t Slytherin
We meet the Gryffindor’s house ghost and they call him Nearly Headless Nick because someone tried to behead him but it didn’t work hence the “Nearly” .
We meet Professor Snape and he does something that makes Harry’s scar burn him. He teaches potions and there’s rumors that he doesn’t want to.
Harry has a dream the first night. The dream was of Quirrel’s turban talking to him and telling him that he needs to transfer to the Slytherin house because it’s his destiny but he really doesn’t want to. (Realized this dream was a foreshadow and didn’t realize it until I got to the end)
So Snape hates Harry and is putting him in the center of attention and asking him questions he obviously doesn’t know since he just found out he’s a wizard.
“You– Potter– why didn’t you tell him not to add the quills? Thought he’d make you look good if he got it wrong, did you? That’s another point you’ve lost for Gryffindor.”
That’s so unfair. Snape is really picking on Harry during that entire class.
I was really excited when they started flying class because this is the moment I was waiting for. The Gryffindors learned with Slytherins.
Neville and Hermione are really nervous to fly. Hermione is reading books about flying trying to figure it out which is so relatable.
Neville flies too early and too high and then falls and breaks his wrist so the professor takes him the nurse.
While they’re gone, Harry flies, even the professor told them not to, to save Neville’s thing that his grandmother gave him from Draco and Professor McGonagall takes him to see Wood who’s the caption of Quidditch. Harry’s the 1st first year to join the team.
“Shan’t say nothing if you don’t say please,” said Peeves in his annoying singsong voice.
“All right- please.”
“NOTHING! Ha haaa! Told you I wouldn’t say nothing if you didn’t say please! Ha ha! Haaaaaa!” And they heard the sound of Peeves whooshing away and Filch cursing in rage.
-Peeves – Filch
That actually made me chuckle. I did not see that one coming.
Hermione was crying after she overheard something mean that Ron said about her being annoying and having no friends.
She was crying in the girl’s bathroom and there was a troll approaching her so Ron and Harry go to find her. When they’re caught, Hermione lies and makes it her own fault. That’s how they become friends with her.
I like how Hermione’s making Ron and Harry focus on their studies more while the boys teach her how to let loose and she’s not against breaking the rules anymore.
Harry finds out that Snape was fighting the 3-headed dog that’s guarding something which makes him suspicious.
While Harry is playing Quidditch, Hermione and Ron see Snape using black magic to let Harry lose control of his flying stick and Hermione makes Snape catch on fire in order to stop him. Hagrid has all the faith in the world that Snape didn’t do this because he’s a Hogwarts teacher. (At first I was blaming Snape but at the end we find out it wasn’t him)
Harry, Ron, and Hermione are searcing for Nicolas Flamel because they believes it’ll lead them to finding out what’s being guarded.
Ron and Harry stay at school for Christmas break and Ron’s mom makes Harry a Weasley sweater for Christmas which is so sweet of her.
Harry gets his invisible cloak and he used it the first time to read the books that are forbidden in order to find Flamel.
Harry could see his family in this magical mirror and he takes Ron to see them but he can’t see anything but himself in the mirror.
The third time Harry goes to visit the mirror, Dumbledore finds him and he’s been there every time but invisible. He explains that the mirror shows what they wants. Harry never knew his family so he wants them and Ron has always been overshadowed by everyone in his family so all he saw was himself.
“What do you see when you look in the mirror?”
“I? I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks.”
-Harry – Dumbledore
Same, Dumbledore, same.
They figure out what’s being guarded is the sorcercer’s stone which is a stone of immortality.
Harry and the Gryffindors win against Snape and the Slytherins in Quidditch.
“Snape” is threatening Professor Quirrel to find a way to get rid of Hagrid’s guarding 3-headed dog.
Hagrid went to the library to find a book about dragons and it’s because he has a dragon egg and he wanted to know how to take care of it.
Hermione, Harry, and Ron are there when his dragon is hatching and Malfoy is peeping through the window and watching before he runs off to the school.
The dragon (Norbert) bit Ron and his fangs were poisonous so he went to the hospital and Draco was being a dick as per usual.
The dragon is gone after Hermione and Harry sneak at night to give it to the men Ron’s brother sent. They’re caught by Filch because they forgot the invisibility cloak upstairs.
Harry, Hermione, and Neville lose 150 points for the Gryffindor House for being out late.
Draco, Hermione, Harry and Neville’s punishment is the forbidden forrest at 11pm. I don’t think that’s fair because it’s called the forbidden forrest for a reason.
Hagrid, Hermione and Harry try to figure out what happened to the unicorn in the forrest.
We find out that Voldemort was the one who slained the unicorn because he could use its blood to come back to life and become stronger. Harry’s spooked because he knows he came back to kill him.
Harry, Hermione and Ron find out that Hagrid was drunk and told the stranger in the cloak how to calm Fluffy down and they believe it might’ve been Snape or Voldemort.
Harry doesn’t care if he gets expelled anymore. He doesn’t want Voldemort to crete the dark ages and he will if “Snape” gets passed the guarding dogs.
When they go through these mazes to find “Snape and Voldemort” , Harry and Ron get tied up by this plants that’s suffocating them. Hemrione is trying to figure out how to bring light to them and this happened:
“Yes– of course– but there’s no wood!” Hermione cried, wringing her hands.
“HAVE YOU GONE MAD?” Ron bellowed. “ARE YOU A WITCH OR NOT?”
Literally died laughing.
Snape wasn’t even there like we all thought but Professor Quirrel is there. We find out that he’s the one who tried to kill Harry at his Quidditch game and Snape was trying to save him.
Harry gets the stone by using the mirror and Voldemort’s face is on the back of Quirrel’s head covered by his turban (the foreshadowing part).
Harry’s scar is literally burning Quirrel’s skin when he goes in to touch Harry’s skin.
Dumbledore gets Quirrel off Harry and he passes out for 3 days.
Dumbledore tells Harry that Snape and his father did hate each other until his father saved Snape and now Snape feels he owes him so that’s why he kept Harry alive all year.
Hagrid visits Harry at the hospital and he’s crying because he believes that this is all his fault for babbling with the stranger. Harry assures him that it wasn’t and Hagrid gives him pictures of his parents.
Gryffindor ended up winning because they got house points back for being courageous.
The book ends with everyone saying goodbye and Harry going back to live his aunt, uncle and Dudley for the summer.
