The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is a historical fiction novel set during World War II and the Holocaust that was published on March 14, 2006 by Knopf Books for Young Readers.

The Book Thief is about words and the impact of words and how they could change everything.
This story is set during World War II in Nazi Germany. It follows the Book Thief who goes by the name of Liesel Meminger who’s a foster girl living near Munich on Himmel Street.
When everything goes wrong in her life, the only way she can hide away from her problems is when she’s stealing book.
With the help of her foster father who is constantly playing the accordion, she leans how to read. Liesel shares her books with her neighbors during bombing raids that have been threatened on them. She also shares them with the Jewish man, Max who’s hidden in her basement before he’s sent to Dachau.
This story is so inspirational and heartbreaking. It’s crazy how one single book can rip my heart out.
I enjoyed this book and all of the characters meant so much to me in different ways. The characters were actually one of the most important parts of this book and it kept me going through the whole book. Especially Rudy, who’s Liesel’s best friend (which I lowkey shipped together)
The whole WW2 subject makes me emotional so going into this book I knew that I would be crying. I wasn’t wrong, this book literally ripped my heart out.
In the beginning of the book, I was confused about who was narratoring the book because they were saying how interested he was in Liesal and I was confused like I thought it could’ve been like a German officer. But my friend who has read this book, told me exactly who was the one that was telling the story and it made so much sense once I realized that.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t mind reading a sad book about WW2.

I really loved this book, I read it with my friends my freshman year, two years ago, and I finished it the afternoon after my friend did. She’s like you’re gonna cry, it’s so sad. I’m like no I never cry with books.
Oh how I was wrong, I balled my eyes out at play practice with one hundred other people just trying to produce a Peter Pan Jr play.
It was a bit embarrassing, but what can a girl do??
